Bereznehuvate: a bit of history
Bereznehuvate dates back to the 1780s, when former Zaporozhian Cossacks settled on the Vysun River. The name comes from a gully overgrown with elm trees. Families from the Chernihiv and Poltava regions arrived in 1795, and a stone St Nicholas Church was built in 1801. From 1820 it was an admiralty settlement whose men took turns working at the Mykolaiv shipyards; it became a district centre in 1937.
People linked to Bereznehuvate
Locals honour doctor Ivan Kartava (1893–1973), who as head of the district hospital kept patients in care, where they were fed, saving people during the Holodomor of 1932–1933. Native soldier Volodymyr Kutsyk (1968–2019) was awarded the Order For Courage, 3rd class.
Bereznehuvate today
The settlement lies on the Black Sea Lowland, 76 km northeast of Mykolaiv, where the Balka Dobra flows into the Vysun. A medical station opened in 1872 grew into the inter-district hospital, and the settlement celebrates its day on the third Sunday of October.
