What to know about Berezne

Berezne was first recorded in 1445 under the name Andriiv; the present name became established only in the 19th century. In the 16th century it was a trading and craft centre surrounded by walls with two gates, with Magdeburg rights, a coat of arms and a town council. During the Kosynsky uprising of 1592 the townspeople supported the rebels passing through. From 1843 the town held 12 one-day and 3 multi-day fairs a year, and timber and grain were floated down the Sluch. Berezne became a town on 21 December 2000.

Notable people of Berezne

Sprint canoeist Yurii Hurin (1966), a seven-time world champion, was born in Berezne, as was forestry economist Ihor Syniakevych (1940–2017), professor and vice-president of the Forestry Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Places every local knows

The town lies on the Sluch River. Its main landmark is the stone St Nicholas Church (1845) with its bell tower. Next to the forestry college, an arboretum was laid out in 1979 — today the Berezne State Dendrological Park, about 30 ha with some 850 species and forms of trees and shrubs. The Berezne Local History Museum (1981) and the Taras Shevchenko monument on Independence Square are also worth a visit. Berezne is known for its match factory and porcelain works.
