Bilohorodka, heir to the chronicle town of Bilhorod

Bilohorodka's recorded history begins in 980, when the town of Bilhorod was the personal domain of Grand Prince Volodymyr Sviatoslavych, with a princely palace. A fortress was built in 991, and under 997 the chronicle tells of the "Bilhorod kissel": besieged by the Pechenegs, the townspeople treated enemy envoys to kissel and honey from wells, and the siege was lifted. In the early 12th century Volodymyr Monomakh placed his eldest son Mstyslav here, and the Church of the Twelve Apostles was built in 1197. Covering over 120 ha, Bilhorod was one of the largest towns of Rus and a bishop's seat.

Notable people of Bilohorodka

Mykola Liubymets, an officer of the Ukrainian People's Republic army and participant of the First Winter Campaign, was born here, as was soldier Oleksandr Saienko (1991–2015), one of the "cyborgs" who defended Donetsk airport; a street in the village bears his name.

Bilohorodka today

The village lies on the right bank of the Irpin River, 8 km west of Kyiv. It preserves the hillfort of chronicle Bilhorod, ramparts 10–12 m high, the Chronicle Well and the foundations of the 1197 church, alongside St Michael's Church and bunkers of the Kyiv Fortified District.
