What to know about Bohodukhiv

Bohodukhiv's first written record dates from 1571, and its 450th anniversary was marked at national level in 2021. The sloboda itself was founded in April 1666 by settler Karpo Borzylenko from Okhtyrka, and the town's first census of October 1667 names otaman Tymish Krysa. Until 1765 Bohodukhiv was a company centre of the Okhtyrka Cossack Regiment; in 1781 it became a county town and received its coat of arms. The Kharkiv–Sumy railway reached it in 1877.

Notable people of Bohodukhiv

Writer, teacher and translator Mariia Hrinchenko (1863–1928), wife of Borys Hrinchenko, was born here, as were film director Viktor Ivchenko (1912–1972), cinematographer Mykhailo Chornyi (1911–1985) and painter Petro Shyhymaha (1917–1999).

Bohodukhiv today

The town stands on the high right bank of the Merla, 58 km from Kharkiv. Its landmarks include the Glory Memorial with the Eternal Flame in the city park, the tank crews monument with a T-34-85, the local history museum, the Holy Spirit, Intercession and Holy Trinity churches, and the old gymnasium buildings.
