What to know about Bohuslav

Historians link the founding of Bohuslav to the forts Yaroslav the Wise built along the Ros River in 1032, and the Hypatian Chronicle first names the town under 1195. In 1591 King Sigismund III Vasa granted Bohuslav to Janusz Ostrogski, and in 1620 it received Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms. On 6 June 1648 Bohdan Khmelnytskyi’s forces entered the town; the hetman kept a temporary residence here and received Patriarch Paisius of Jerusalem in the castle and, in 1654, Patriarch Macarius of Antioch. Colonel Samiilo Samus took Bohuslav in 1685 and rebuilt its monastery and castle. From 1796 to 1837 it was a county town of Kyiv Governorate.

Famous names of Bohuslav

Painter Ivan Soshenko (1807–1876), a friend of Taras Shevchenko who helped buy his freedom from serfdom, was born here. Writer Ivan Nechui-Levytskyi (1838–1918) studied at the local school in 1847–1852 and later taught there; Marko Vovchok lived here in 1885–1886 and Sholem Aleichem in 1877–1880. A plaque on School No. 2 honours defender Pavlo Pushniak (1978–2014), a Euromaidan participant.

The town spans both banks of the Ros, where the Bohuslav granite outcrops form part of the Bohuslavl landscape park. Landmarks include Holy Trinity Church (completed 1861), St Nicholas Monastery, the Church of St Vladislaus (1819–1825), the 1726 Kamianytsia cheder — the town’s oldest building — the Pokras mansion (1887), the Soshenko and Marko Vovchok memorial museums and the Marusia Bohuslavka monument.
