Bolhrad, a Bulgarian town on Lake Yalpuh

Bolhrad was founded in 1821 by Bulgarian settlers on the site of the village of Tabaki. General Ivan Inzov, governor of Bessarabia and patron of the Bulgarian colonists, is regarded as the town's founder and asked to be buried here. After the Crimean War southern Bessarabia, including Bolhrad, passed to the Principality of Moldavia, and in 1859 the Saints Cyril and Methodius Gymnasium opened as the first Bulgarian secondary school. The poet-revolutionary Hristo Botev lived here in 1871. The town's 200th anniversary in 2021 was marked at the national level.

The town sits on the eastern shore of Lake Yalpuh, Ukraine's largest freshwater lake.
