Boryspil appears in chronicles of 1015–1154 as Lto and Alto; its first mention is tied to the death of Prince Borys on the Alta River in 1015. In 1508 the land passed to the Pustynno-Mykilskyi Monastery, in 1590 the Sejm granted the town to Wojciech Czanowicki, and in 1596 Sigismund III made it a royal estate and seat of a starosty; under Polish rule Boryspil received Magdeburg rights. By a decree of 14 January 1752 Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovskyi gave the town to his sister and her husband Yukhym Darahan. Boryspil International Airport welcomed its first passengers in 1965, and the town's millennium was marked at state level in 2015.
Boryspil is the birthplace of writer Petro Raievskyi (1847–1886), actor Mykola Babenko (1942–2005), TV presenter Svitlana Leontieva (1959) and hygienist Zakharii Frenkel. Pavlo Chubynskyi, author of the Ukrainian national anthem's lyrics, is buried here. Native son Colonel Valerii Hudz (1971–2022) was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine, and an Alley of Heroes opened in the central park on 31 March 2023.
The town lies 35 km south-east of Kyiv on the M-03 highway, with Boryspil Airport 9 km from the centre. Landmarks include a 9th–12th-century rampart, the Church of Saints Borys and Hlib, the fire tower, the 1901 railway station, the Knyshove memorial park and the statue of Prince Borys on European Square, unveiled in 2021. The town is home to the Kyiv lifting equipment plant, the largest crane maker in Eastern Europe. Order a bouquet from anywhere in the world and we will hand it over in Boryspil.
