Borodianka: from the Koziatychi estate to a modern town

Lithuanian and Polish records tell of early Borodianka: in the 15th–16th centuries the Koziatychi estate, as Borodianka was then known, belonged to the Vasentsevych family, whose descendants took the name Makarevych. The name is traced either to the surrounding pine forests or to “boroda”, a wedge of forest reaching the river. In 1797 a wooden St Michael’s Church replaced an older one, and in the mid-19th century the town was the seat of landowner Lambert Poniatowski. Borodianka became a district centre in 1923 and an urban-type settlement in 1957; in 1974 construction of a branch of Kyiv’s Chervonyi Ekskavator plant began. The town was liberated from Russian forces on 1 April 2022.

Names linked to Borodianka

Writer, critic and human rights advocate Lev Kopelev (1912–1997) is linked to Borodianka: some sources give it as his birthplace, and the town honours him as one of its residents.

Borodianka today

Borodianka lies on the Zdvyzh River, with the Trostianets stream crossing its north-eastern part. Its focal point is Shevchenko Square with a bust of the poet (1999), and a statue of Archangel Michael, erected in 2015 for the town’s 825th anniversary, stands on the main street. The town has a Shevchenko Palace of Culture, a local history museum opened in 2016 and a memorial to local territorial defence fighters who defended it in 2022.
