Bortnychi: from a beekeepers’ land to a Kyiv neighbourhood

Bortnychi first appears in writing in 1508, when its owner Saltan Albertovych sold this “bortna” land to St Nicholas Monastery. The name comes from the old word “bort” — a hollow tree where wild bees nested. As a village Bortnychi is recorded from 1598; it belonged to the Boryspil company of the Pereiaslav and, from 1752, the Kyiv Cossack regiment. In 1885 it was a state village by the Mlynne and Tynnytsia lakes with 135 households and 1,032 residents. It became an urban-type settlement on 21 December 1987 and was incorporated into Kyiv on 26 August 1988.

Bortnychi today

Today Bortnychi is a historic neighbourhood in south-eastern Kyiv, in Darnytskyi District, reached via Svitla, Yevhena Kharchenka and Ivana Diachenka streets. A late Trypillian settlement on a sandy Dnipro terrace here was excavated by Vikentii Khvoika in 1912. A church built in 1944 stands on Levadna Street, on the site of the older Church of the Intercession. Locals still navigate by the old quarters — Mostova, Sloboda, Orokhiv, Berezniaky, Kalanchak, Hora, Demydivka. Our courier will bring flowers to any street in Bortnychi.
