A short history of Bratske

Bratske is recorded from 1788, though a Cossack winter camp stood here as early as the 1760s–1770s. The village was later granted to Illia Zhyvkovych, an officer of Serbian origin. By 1886 Bratske was a market town and volost centre in Yelysavethrad county, with 142 households, 634 residents, a church, a shop and Sunday markets. A district centre from 1923, it became an urban-type settlement in 1956 and remained the centre of Bratske district until 2020.

Names linked to Bratske

Folklorist, local historian and poet Mykhailo Radkevych (1926–2001), who studied the history and archaeology of the steppe Buh region, lived and died in Bratske; the local history museum bears his name.

Bratske today

The town lies on the Mertvovod River, joined here by the Kamiano-Kostuvata and the Komyshuvata, and Copper and Bronze Age settlements and burial mounds have been found on its territory. Its pride is an old 18th-century park; nearby are St Nicholas Church, the Radkevych Museum of Local History, the House of Culture with its folk theatre and a park laid out for the 45th anniversary of Victory.
