What to know about Brovary

Brovary was founded by Yan Aksak, headman of Oster, and its first official record dates from 2 August 1630, in Metropolitan Rutskyi's complaint against Archimandrite Petro Mohyla. Beauplan's map of 1648 marks it as Brewary, and the most common explanation links the name to the word brovar, a brewery. In January 1649 the Brovary Cossack company was formed under its first captain Fedir Vedmid, who built the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The railway arrived in 1868, Brovary became a town on 30 December 1956, and more than 20 factories were built in 1955–1970, including a powder metallurgy plant, the only one in the USSR.

Notable people of Brovary

Brovary is the birthplace of poet and playwright Dmytro Chepurnyi (1908–1944), local historian Dmytro Hamalii (1919–1994), actress Nadiia Mozhaikina (1939) and artist Zhanna Kadyrova (1981). Hero of Ukraine Yevhenii Zelenskyi (1991–2014) studied here, and boxer Volodymyr Klitschko graduated from the Brovary Olympic reserve school. In 2022 the 72nd Mechanised Brigade defended the town, and a street was named after its soldiers, the Black Zaporozhians.

Brovary today

The town borders Kyiv to the west and is framed by pine forests to the north and west; instead of a river it has several small lakes. Brovary has 10 neighbourhoods, the largest being Torhmash and Masyv. Locals gather for town festivals in Peremohy Park, visit the Brovary Local History Museum, and Shevchenko Square stands where the Holy Trinity Church was built in 1859.
