Brusyliv: from Zdvyzhensk to today

Brusyliv first appears in the Hypatian Chronicle under 1097 and 1150 as the Old Rus town of Zdvyzhensk. The name Brusyliv is first recorded in 1543, and in 1585 the town received Magdeburg rights. It has been an urban-type settlement since 1979.

Brusyliv is the centre of the Brusyliv settlement hromada in Zhytomyr district. The settlement lies on the Zdvyzh River, which gave the old town its name. An 11th–12th-century hillfort, 12th–13th-century burial mounds and the ruins of a 14th-century castle recall its deep past, alongside the Capuchin Monastery (1787) and the Taras Shevchenko bust (1997).
