What to know about Bucha

Bucha's written history goes back to 1630, when the name was recorded in connection with the village of Yablunka on the left bank of the Bucha River, owned by the nobleman Yu. Liasota. In 1868 Severyn Sahatovskyi's son built a brickworks nearby whose "Yablunka" bricks were known abroad. The settlement itself grew around a halt on the Kyiv–Kovel railway built in 1898 and soon became a dacha resort. Bucha became an urban-type settlement in 1938 and a town in 2006, with effect from 1 January 2007. On 24 March 2022 it was named a Hero City of Ukraine and on 31 March 2022 it was liberated.

Names linked to Bucha

Painter Mykola Murashko (1844–1909), founder of the Kyiv school of painting, lived and died here. The family of writer Mykhailo Bulgakov (1891–1940) spent summers at their own dacha, now marked by a memorial sign (2011). From 1904 the families of composer Levko Revutskyi (1889–1977) and bridge engineer Yevhen Paton (1870–1953) summered in Bucha.

Bucha today

The town lies between the Bucha and Rokach rivers, 25 km west of Kyiv, with a third of its area covered by forest park. Its heart is the 52-hectare city park with Parkove Lake. Historic buildings include the Hnat Liaskovskyi house (1897) and the Vatslav Dombrovskyi estate (1910), and since 2023 the town has a Bergisch Gladbach Square honouring its German twin town.
