Tsarychanka, a Cossack town on the Oril

Tsarychanka has been known since 1604; its name is linked to a river whose water turned yellow from the clay slopes of Kalytva Hill. In 1677 it was a company town of the Poltava Regiment, and its upper part, once ringed by earthen ramparts, is still called the Castle. Local Cossacks grew tobacco, kept bees, fished and traded, as company commander Fedir Babanskyi reported in 1722. From 1731 Tsarychanka was a fortress of the Ukrainian Line, in 1775–1784 it was a county centre, and from 1784 to 1797 it was called Oleksopil.

Notable people of Tsarychanka

Names linked to Tsarychanka include economist Kostiantyn Voblyi (1876–1947) and geologist Pavlo Kanibolotskyi, rector of Chernivtsi University in 1944–1949. Among today's locals is Colonel Dmytro Kashchenko of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
