Cherniakhiv: a little history

Cherniakhiv is known from 1545, when an inventory described it as a small town of 11 households owned by the Nemyrych family. The Nemyrychs built a wooden fortress here, and from 1593 to 1612 an Arian school operated with their support. Yurii Nemyrych, a diplomat educated at Cambridge, Oxford and the Sorbonne, came from this family. In the 1820s the Decembrist Society of United Slavs met in Cherniakhiv, and a cloth factory opened in 1845.
