What to know about Chornobai

Chornobai grew up in the early 18th century as a free settlement of Cossacks from the Kropyvna company of the Pereiaslav Regiment and first appears in documents in 1721. Over time it was called Slobidka, Chernobai and even Darahanshchyna after the Cossack captain Darahan, a name that survives only for one neighbourhood. By 1787 it had 1,199 residents, and from the mid-19th century it was a volost centre, where a brewery opened in 1845 and a fruit and grape nursery was planted in 1911. Chornobai became a district centre in 1923 and an urban-type settlement in 1965.

Chornobai is the birthplace of stage director and actor Borys Romanytskyi (1891–1988), kobzar tradition researcher Marko Mishalov (1903–1995), geometry professor Vasyl Borovyk (1925–2007) and historian Volodymyr Rychka (born 1955).

Chornobai today

The town sits on the Irklii River in the Dnipro Lowland, 22 km from Zolotonosha railway station. Landmarks include the Chornobai Local History Museum (since 1969), the Church of St John the Merciful, the new Church of St Barbara and the Second World War memorial.
