A short history of Chop
Chop was first mentioned in writing in 1281; its name most likely comes from the Csapy family, its early owners. The oldest town seal, from the late 18th century, shows a peasant in a boat on a river. In 1872 a railway station and lines to Satu Mare, Uzhhorod and Korolevo opened, turning Chop into a key transport hub. It became a town in 1957, and its station once handled up to 60 million tonnes of freight a year.
Notable people of Chop
Natives include guitar virtuoso and composer Ferenc Bern?th (born 1981) and Colonel Viktor Kalytych (1963—2017) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Chop is Ukraine's westernmost town, set between the Tisza and Latorytsia rivers where the borders of Slovakia and Hungary meet, 24 km from Uzhhorod. It hosts several border crossings, and its landmarks include the railway station, the former synagogue, the Reformed church and the Roman Catholic church.
