Chortkiv: from its charter to today

Chortkiv dates its town history to 4 September 1522, when King Sigismund I the Old allowed Yurii Chartkovskyi to turn his village on the Seret into a town, so in 2022 Chortkiv celebrated its 500th anniversary. In 1604 voivode Stanislaw Golski obtained two annual fairs for the town, founded a Dominican church and monastery and built a stone castle. The Potocki family owned Chortkiv from 1618 to 1777, and in 1672–1699 the town was under Ottoman rule. In June 1919 it was the focus of the Chortkiv Offensive of the Ukrainian Galician Army.

Notable people of Chortkiv

Austrian writer Karl Emil Franzos (1848–1904) and actress and singer Kateryna Rubchakova (1881–1919) were born here. People's Artist of Ukraine Borys Mirus (1928–2021) came from Syniakovo, now part of the town, and graphic artist Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915–1985) graduated from the Chortkiv gymnasium.

Chortkiv today

The town sits in a deep hollow of the Seret canyon, 70 km from Ternopil on the M19 highway. Landmarks include the Golski Castle, the Dominican Church of St. Stanislaus (1610), the wooden Church of the Ascension (1630) and the Town Hall of 1924, whose clock chimes every fifteen minutes. Nearby are the Vavryniv geological site and small gypsum caves. Our courier will bring flowers to any district of Chortkiv.
