A short history of Derazhnia

The first written record of Derazhnia dates from 1431, when King W?adys?aw II Jagie??o assigned 40 hryvnias on Derazhnia to one Dedrich; in the early 15th century the settlement appeared as Darazno. On 9 April 1614, at the request of starost ???kiewski, Derazhnia received Magdeburg rights, and in 1664 it was granted to former Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi. Under the 1672 Treaty of Buchach the town passed to Turkey as the centre of a nahiye, but in 1682 Jan Sobieski's troops retook it. The railway boosted growth from 1,201 residents in 1873 to 6,118 in 1897, and Sholem Aleichem described Derazhnia in his story The German. On 8 November 1919 a State Conference with Symon Petliura and Yevhen Petrushevych was held here. Derazhnia has had town status since 1987.

Notable people of Derazhnia

Derazhnia native Ivan Zubkov (1973–2015), a senior lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Hero of Ukraine, was one of the "cyborgs" who died defending Donetsk Airport. Conductor Vasyl Hulko (1959), Honoured Artist of Ukraine, was also born here.

Derazhnia today

The town stands on the Vovk River, 45 km from Khmelnytskyi, on the Zhmerynka–Hrechany railway. Nine 19th–early 20th century buildings are listed architectural monuments, including the Ratsiborovskyi mansion, the lawyer Hershhorin's mansion and an apartment house of 1912. The Derazhnia Town History Museum and the Museum of the South-Western Railway and Borys Oliinyk (2001) are open to visitors, and the Church of St Volodymyr the Great dates from 2007.
