A short history of Yelanets

The settlement on the Hnylyi Yelanets River was founded in 1802-1804 and was first called Hnylyi Yelanets. Its first residents were Cossacks from the Poltava and Kyiv regions and peasants from the Kursk and Voronezh provinces. In 1810 it was renamed Novomoskovsk, in 1818 it became a military settlement, and in 1829 it became the seat of a Uhlan regiment. It took the name Yelanets in 1858. From 1935 to 2020 it was the centre of Yelanets district.

Notable people of Yelanets

Oleksandr Danylov (1925-2000) was a military conductor and professor at the Kyiv Institute of Culture and Arts. Viloriy Pashchenko (born 1945) is an actor and Honoured Artist of Ukraine. Liliia Zolotonosha (born 1963) is a poet, lawyer and journalist.

Yelanets today

Soborna Street runs north to south along the river, and Independence Avenue runs parallel to it as far as the Park of Glory. The town park was laid out in 1932-1933. There is a monument to Taras Shevchenko, a memorial to the heroes of the Second World War, and a local newspaper, Yelanetskyi Visnyk. The Yelanets Steppe nature reserve lies nearby.
