A short history of Fastiv

The first written record of Khvastiv dates from 1390, when a charter of Kyiv prince Volodymyr Olherdovych confirmed the Rozhanovskyi family's ownership. Rebuilt after 16th-century Tatar raids with the help of Bishop J?zef Wereszczy?ski, the town received Magdeburg rights in 1601. In 1702 it was the centre of Semen Palii's uprising, and in 1768 haidamaka leaders Shvachka and Zhurba made it their residence. On 1 December 1918 the treaty uniting the UNR and the ZUNR was signed on the tracks of Fastiv station. Fastiv has been a town since 1938.

Notable people of Fastiv

Inventor of arc welding Mykola Benardos lived here from 1899 until his death in 1905 and has a monument in the town. Locals are proud of composer Anatolii Horchynskyi (1924–2007), bandura player Nina Pysarenko, WhatsApp founder Jan Koum (born 1976) and European boxing champion Vitalii Kachanovskyi (1959–2020). Hero of Ukraine Volodymyr Karachun (1974–2023) is among the town's natives and residents.

Fastiv today

Fastiv stands above the Unava River, which forms the Unava and Snihurivka ponds within the town. Key sights are the wooden Church of the Intercession (1779–1781), the neo-Gothic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (1911), St. Nicholas Cathedral, the local history museum and the Unification Act railway carriage museum by Fastiv I station.
