Zakharivka in brief

People lived here long before the town: remains of a Mesolithic settlement and a large Chernyakhiv culture burial ground of the 3rd–6th centuries have been found in Zakharivka. The settlement dates from 1791; in 1798 it had 78 households and 249 residents, and in 1843 it became a volost centre of Tiraspol County with market-town status. Its position on the Odesa–Balta grain route made it a notable grain-trading centre. Renamed Frunzivka in 1927, it regained its historical name on 19 May 2016.

Notable people of Zakharivka

Economist Valerii Yevdokymenko (b. 1939), a doctor of economics and professor, was born here. Historian Pavlo Ivanov (b. 1860) and mathematician Oleksandr Markus (b. 1932), professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, are also linked to the town. Locals honour Sergeant Oleksandr Orlyk (1983–2014) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Zakharivka today

The Kuchurhan River flows through the town, and the R33 and T1614 roads pass through it. Landmarks include the local history museum, the central park and the memorial to residents killed in 1941–1945, with the Sheptered landscape reserve nearby.
