Haisyn: from its first mention to today

Haisyn's written history begins in 1545, when the town belonged to the Bratslav Voivodeship. On 5 September 1577 King Stephen B?thory granted the nobleman Jan Oryshevsky a privilege for the Haisyn lands on the Sob River. In 1663 Yurii Khmelnytsky laid down the hetman's regalia before the Cossack officers here. Haisyn received Magdeburg rights in 1744 and became a county town of Podolia Governorate in 1797. In 1806 the Siversky Dragoon Regiment, in which the writer Ivan Kotliarevsky served, was stationed in the town.

Notable people of Haisyn

Haisyn is the birthplace of tenor Volodymyr Zarkov (1945–1999), People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, historian Leonid Biesov (1938) and poet David Bromberg (1915–1998). The town honours Colonel Serhii Kotenko (1967–2022), a native who distinguished himself repelling the Russian invasion and was posthumously named a Hero of Ukraine.

Haisyn today

The town lies on the Sob River along the E50 / M30 highway. Landmarks include the former boys' gymnasium building of the early 20th century (now Lyceum-Gymnasium No. 7), the Church of St Panteleimon consecrated in 2015, the Haisyn Local History Museum, the G. Tantsiura museum-estate and B. Khmelnytsky Park. The Alley of Glory memorial, opened in 2019, honours fallen soldiers of the 59th Motorized Infantry Brigade.
