What to know about Hlevakha

Hlevakha is recorded from 1471, when only 8 families lived here; by 1561, under owner Semen Hrynkovych, it had 69 households. From 1565 it belonged to Kyiv's St Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, and the Bytyi Road from Kyiv to Vasylkiv and Bila Tserkva ran through it, recalled today by Novyi Shliakh Street and Shliakhova station. The village was destroyed during Khmelnytskyi's war of liberation and residents founded Mala Hlevakha, today's Maliutianka; the old site was resettled from 1695. In 1766 it had 612 residents working as farmers, weavers and smiths, and from 1861 to 1912 it was a volost centre that also governed Budaivka, now Boiarka. The Explosion Treatment of Materials centre of the Paton Electric Welding Institute has worked here since 1982, and Hlevakha became a settlement in 2024.

Famous names of Hlevakha

Linked to Hlevakha are State Duma deputy Prokip Snihyr (1880–1933) and local-born Marko Shliakhovyi (1887–1921), known as otaman Karmeliuk and author of the memoir Notes of an Insurgent. Locals also claim ground-attack pilot Mykyta Khvoia (1911–1988), Hero of the Soviet Union. The community honours Staff Sergeant Ihor Shylovych (1967–2023), posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, 3rd class.

Hlevakha today

The settlement lies 10.5 km south-west of Kyiv on the small Hleva River, and its name is linked to local clay — one quarter is still called Hlynianka. The railway splits Hlevakha into eastern and western parts, while the M-05 Kyiv–Odesa highway runs along its east side. Landmarks include the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God, the Church of the Inexhaustible Cup icon, the war memorial in the centre and an Il-62 airliner that draws visitors. The National Scientific Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation and Electrification is based here. Our courier will bring flowers to any part of Hlevakha.
