Hnivan: from a railway station to a town

The name Hnivan has been known since 1721, when, according to Adam Boniecki's armorial, it belonged to a village that stood on the site of today's Selyshche until the late 19th century. The modern town grew up beside the Kyiv–Odesa railway: the station opened here in 1870 took the name of the nearest village. In 1874 the sugar factory of the Hnivan joint-stock company, founded by landowner J?zef Jaroszy?ski, began work, and a workers' settlement formed around it. The town also absorbed the village of Vytava, known since 1569. Hnivan became an urban-type settlement in 1938 and a town on 11 December 1981.

Notable people of Hnivan

Hnivan is the birthplace of Olena Markova (1930–2000), a pathophysiologist, professor and Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, and of jeweller Volodymyr Balyberdin (born 1954), a People's Master of Decorative Art. Locals also honour Senior Lieutenant Oleksandr Vapniar (1977–2015) of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, holder of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 3rd class.

Hnivan today

The town lies on the left bank of the Southern Buh. It is known for its granite quarries, worked since the second half of the 19th century and now over 150 m deep, and for the reinforced-concrete plant opened in 1969, once the largest in Europe. Its architectural gem is the neo-Gothic Church of St Joseph the Betrothed (1906). Hnivan is also a stage of the Camino Podolico, the Podillia Way of St James.
