Holovanivsk: from its first record to today

Holovanivsk is first recorded in 1757, when a settlement grew up by an old ford across the Kainara on the road from Uman to Ochakiv, within the Potocki family's Uman estates. In 1764 Kyiv voivode Franciszek Salezy Potocki endowed the Church of St John the Theologian, and by the late 18th century Holovanivsk was a market town and volost centre. The railway arrived nearby in 1890; by the early 1900s the town had brick, carriage, distilling and tanning works, a bank and a hotel. It has been a district centre since 1923 and an urban-type settlement since 1957.

Names linked to Holovanivsk

The Mandzenko brothers were born here: Yosyp served as a lieutenant colonel and Kost as a sotnyk in the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic. On 9 October 2015 a memorial sign to fallen soldiers was consecrated at the parish of St John the Theologian.

Landmarks and local character

The town lies on the Kainara River, 7 km from Holovanivsk station on the Haivoron — Pidhorodna narrow-gauge line, and a Trypillian settlement was found on the river's left bank. Landmarks include the mid-19th-century Church of St John the Theologian, a late-19th-century synagogue, the 1908 gaming house, the Holovanivsk well dug in 1914 and the district history museum.
