Hostomel: from its first record to today

Hostomel is known from 1494, and in 1495 Grand Duke Alexander of Lithuania granted it to Prince Ivan Hlynskyi. In 1614 King Sigismund III gave the town Magdeburg rights. During the Khmelnytskyi era Hostomel became a Cossack company town of the Kyiv Regiment, a church was built here in 1694, and in 1866 it became a volost centre. It gained urban-type settlement status in 1938 and absorbed the village of Mostyshche in 1972. On 6 March 2022 Hostomel was named a Hero City of Ukraine, and Russian troops left it on 1 April 2022.

Hostomel is the birthplace of pianist Oleksandr Eidelman (1904–1995), actress Olha Mateshko (b. 1947), UNR Army colonel Fedir Artemenko and musician Mykhailo Klymenko (1987–2025), founder of the band ADAM.

The settlement lies on the Irpin and Rokach rivers. Its pride is the Church of the Holy Protection next to Holy Protection Square. Hostomel is home to the Antonov airport, whose 3.5 km runway can take the An-124 Ruslan, as well as the Antonov state enterprise and a glassworks.
