Hradyzk: from Horodyshche to a county town

Until 1789 Hradyzk was called Horodyshche; it grew up beside the Pyvohirskyi Monastery, founded around 1629 on Pyvykha Hill, and is reliably recorded from 30 June 1639. From 1686 it was a Cossack company town, and on 19 September 1676 Hetman Petro Doroshenko renounced the hetmanship here, handing the regalia to Ivan Samoilovych. In 1739 Colonel Karp Chasnyk routed about five thousand Tatars nearby. Hradyzk became a county town in 1781, received its coat of arms in 1782 and its present name in 1789.
