Hrymailiv, a town with Magdeburg rights

According to Polish researchers, Hrymailiv was first recorded in 1464 as the property of the nobleman Hrymalei. Around 1600 the Ludzicki family built a fortified castle here with four hexagonal towers. In 1720 Grand Crown Hetman Adam Miko?aj Sieniawski granted the town Magdeburg rights, and its coat of arms, a golden lion holding a crescent and a star, dates from that period. In the 19th century Count Leonard Pini?ski built the first steam mill in Eastern Galicia here, and in 1897 the Velyki Birky – Hrymailiv railway opened.

Famous natives of Hrymailiv

The town's best-known native is physicist and electrical engineer Ivan Puliui (1845–1918), whose name the local school bears. Cookbook author Dariia Tsviek (1909–2004) and historian Roman Szporluk (born 1933) were also born here. Locals honour Volodymyr Madarash (1984–2022), a serviceman who fought in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
