Khodosivka: from a giant hillfort to today

Khodosivka is first recorded in 1546. Its old name, Feodosivka, honoured St Theodosius of the Caves and gradually shifted in local speech to Khodosivka. North-west of the village lies the Great Khodosivka Hillfort of the Early Iron Age, one of three giant hillforts of Ukraine's forest-steppe, with a horseshoe rampart 4.5 by 3 km that became part of Kyiv's last defence line in Rus times. The village once belonged to the Koretskyi princes, and in early 1649 local peasants and Cossacks blocked the road of Adam Kysil's royal commission, which paid ten thalers to pass. The Zboriv Register listed 91 Cossacks in the Khodosivka company, and in 1652 a charter of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi granted the village to Kyiv's St Nicholas Convent. Soldier Volodymyr Holota (1985–2015), who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war, was born here.

Names linked to Khodosivka

People's Artist of Ukraine Pavlo Zibrov and mountaineer Ihor Chaplynskyi, winner of the Golden Ice Axe, live in Khodosivka. Since 2003 the village has hosted a permanent archaeological expedition led by Ihor Hotun that recreates ancient pottery, smithing, beekeeping and mead-making.

The village sits on the Siverka River beside the Novoobukhivska highway (N-01). Beyond the Great Hillfort, see the Small (Round) Khodosivka Hillfort, the Church of St Paraskeva on Soborna Street, the Khodosivka Oak and the pillboxes of the Kyiv Fortified Region in the woods. Planerna Hill in the south is a launch site for paragliders and hang gliders, a lake with a beach lies to the north, and the Dutch-style Manufactura outlet village stands by the highway.
