Old Rus sources knew the town as Khoten: in the late 14th century it was entered in the List of Rus Towns, and on 8 October 1408 Khotyn was mentioned in a charter of Moldavian voivode Alexander. From 1373 the town belonged to Moldavia; in the 15th–16th centuries the fortress was a residence of Moldavian rulers, and voivode Stephen III the Great greatly extended its walls. In autumn 1621 Cossacks under Hetman Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachnyi, together with the army of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, repelled the army of Sultan Osman II, and the Peace of Khotyn was signed on 9 October. On 11 November 1673 Crown Hetman Jan Sobieski routed an Ottoman army here. After 1812 Khotyn became a district centre of Bessarabia Governorate and in 1826 received a coat of arms with a citadel and crossed sabres.
Kateryna Shkabara (1912–2002), a cyberneticist and one of the creators of MESM, the first electronic computer in continental Europe, was born in Khotyn. Other natives include librarian and bibliographer Yevhen Dobrzhynskyi (1864–1938) and graphic artist Ihor Yuriev (1951), Honoured Artist of Ukraine. Film director and producer David Yanover (1905–1972) spent his childhood here.
