What to know about Khust

Khust's story starts with its castle: construction on a volcanic hill began in 1090 and was completed under King B?la III in 1191, guarding the route from the Solotvyno salt mines. In 1709 Francis II R?k?czi convened a Transylvanian diet here, and in 1766 lightning and fire destroyed the fortress. On 21 January 1919 the All-People's Congress met in Khust, where 420 delegates from 175 localities voted to unite Transcarpathia with Ukraine. From 10 November 1938 Khust was the capital of Carpatho-Ukraine, and on 15 March 1939 its Soim, meeting in the Khust gymnasium hall, confirmed the proclamation of independence. Fallen Carpathian Sich fighters are buried on Castle Hill.

People connected with Khust

It was here on 14 March 1939 that Father Avgustyn Voloshyn proclaimed the independence of Carpatho-Ukraine. The philosopher Vasyl Dovhovych (1783–1849) lived and is buried in Khust. The town is also the birthplace of Count J?zsef Teleki (1738–1796), guardian of the Holy Crown, collector and writer, and of surveyor Istv?n G?thy (1780–1859), inventor of the geodetic angle mirror.

Sights and local character

Khust lies in the Upper Tysa basin on the Khustets River, near the confluence of the Tysa and Rika and 9 km from the Romanian border. Above it stand the ruins of Khust Castle; in the centre are the Reformed Church (the former 13th-century St Elizabeth church), the Baroque Church of St Anne, an 18th-century synagogue and the Annunciation Church.
