The town grew out of the Buhove farmstead founded in the late 18th century. It was renamed Illichivskyi in 1927 and became the urban-type settlement of Illichivsk in 1952. Construction of the seaport began in 1957, and town status followed in 1973. On 4 February 2016 the Verkhovna Rada renamed it Chornomorsk as part of decommunization. In 2022 the port of Chornomorsk, together with Odesa and Pivdennyi, joined the grain corridor for food exports.
