Illintsi: a town with Cossack history

Illintsi is first recorded in 1391, though Scythian burial mounds and a 5th-century Slavic settlement survive nearby. In 1448 King Casimir IV Jagiellon granted the village, then called Lyntsi, to the nobleman Menko. Colonel Ivan Bohun, Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Ivan Sirko all visited the town in the 17th century. On 22 October 1757 King Augustus III gave Illintsi Magdeburg rights and a coat of arms with a golden swan and six cygnets. In 1875 Princess Demidova-San Donato built a sugar factory, and Illintsi became a town on 1 December 1986.

Notable people of Illintsi

Natives include poet Seweryn Goszczy?ski (1801–1876), chemist and art collector Vasyl Shchavynsky (1868–1924), artist Leonid Soifertis (1911–1996), painter Oleksa Zakharchuk (1929–2013) and Olympic equestrian Inna Zhurakovska (born 1956). Residents also honour Marine Lieutenant Maksym Yamkovyi, posthumously awarded the Order of Danylo Halytsky.

Illintsi today

The town lies where the Viazovytsia and Sobok flow into the Sob, near the Illintsi meteorite crater. Landmarks include the wooden Church of the Holy Mother of God (1773) in Cossack Baroque style, the Resurrection Cathedral (1897), the Art Nouveau Manov merchant house and the former synagogue, the largest in Vinnytsia region.
