What to know about Inhulets

Inhulets is today part of the city of Kryvyi Rih; from 1956 to 2002 it was a separate town. The area has been settled since ancient times: Neolithic sites, Bronze Age and Scythian burial mounds were found nearby, and the Dubova Mohyla mound yielded a painted Trypillia culture vessel. Iron ore mining began here in 1891, and within ten years six mines were operating. In the 1920s the miners' settlements merged into one named after the river; it became a town in 1956, joined the new Inhulets district in 1962 and was incorporated into Kryvyi Rih in October 2002.

Inhulets today

The area lies on the right bank of the Inhulets River. Its main employer is the Inhulets mining and processing plant. Inhulets has a palace of culture with a 650-seat hall, a sports palace and a stadium. Landmarks include St Nicholas Church, the Miners' Monument and, in the wider district, the Sandstone Rock geological site and the Vizyrka landscape reserve.
