Irpin: from a railway siding to a Hero City

Modern Irpin grew out of the railway: in 1898 the Kyiv–Kovel line was laid next to the bridge over the Irpin River, and in 1902 the newspaper Kievlyanin mentioned the Irpin siding. Older corners of the town date further back: the Pylypiv Potik farmstead is recorded in 1803, and the German colony of Severynivka appeared in the east in the late 19th century. The settlement grew without a plan, its streets cut through the forest as numbered "lines". On 28 February 1918 the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and Haidamaky defeated a Bolshevik unit here and opened the road to Kyiv. Irpin became a town on 30 December 1956, with Ivan Nuzhnyi as the first head of its executive committee. On 24 March 2022 it was awarded the title Hero City of Ukraine and was liberated from Russian troops on 28 March 2022.

People of Irpin

Composer Kostiantyn Skorokhod (1921–1991), author of over 150 songs, was born here. Writer Mykola Nosov (1908–1976), creator of Dunno, spent his childhood in Irpin; his family house at 12 Stelmakha Street survives and a park is named after his hero. Painter Fedir Krychevskyi, first rector of the Ukrainian Academy of Fine Arts, lived here in 1944–1947, artist Volodymyr Sydoruk from 1953, and poet Oleksandr Irvanets has lived here since 1993.

Irpin today

The town lies on the Irpin River 7 km from Kyiv, a former dacha and resort area among pine woods. Landmarks include the Holy Trinity Church (in use since 1911), the Irpin Writers' House in the former Chokolov dacha, Volodymyr Pravyk Park, Central Park and the 600-year-old Pradub oak. In 2016 Irpin entered the National Register of Records of Ukraine for the number of parks built or renovated in two years. A courier will bring your bouquet to any part of Irpin.
