A short history of Irshava

Irshava is first recorded in 1341 as Maksemhaza, "Maksym's house", owned by Maksym, son of the Wallachian prince Tatomyr. People settled here much earlier: on Mount Stremtura an Iron Age hillfort stood in the 8th–7th centuries BC, one of the oldest fortifications in Transcarpathia. In 1916 a narrow-gauge line between Berehove and Kushnytsia was laid through Irshava as part of the Borzhava railway. Irshava became an urban-type settlement on 30 May 1947 and a town on 6 September 1982.

Famous people of Irshava

Irshava is the birthplace of fencer Vasyl Stankovych (b. 1946), a two-time Olympic silver medallist and four-time world champion, as well as writer Stepan Zhupanyn (1936–2005), physicist Volodymyr Lendiel (1934–2000) and actor Vasyl Fushchych (b. 1929).

Irshava today

The town lies in the Carpathian foothills on both banks of the Irshavka River. Landmarks include the Church of Sts Peter and Paul, the Central Bridge from the First Czechoslovak Republic era, the Stremtura hillfort and the castle site at Bodulov.
