What to know about Ivankiv

The lands of future Ivankiv were first recorded in 1524, when King Sigismund I the Old confirmed the Pasynkivshchyna estate on the Teteriv River to Kyiv landowner Tymofii Proskura. The town takes its name from Kyiv city judge Ivan Proskura-Sushchanskyi, founder of a manor-castle named after him; historian Lavrentii Pokhylevych dates the first mention of Ivankiv to 1589. The Lubomirski family owned it from 1724 to the late 19th century, and it became a district centre in 1923. On 1 April 2022 the Armed Forces of Ukraine fully liberated Ivankiv.

Ivankiv is the birthplace of Lieutenant General Kindrat Melnyk (1900–1971), builder and restorer Arkadii Khabinskyi (1928–2022), winner of the Shevchenko State Prize, singer Tetiana Murashko (b. 1967), acoustics scientist Vitalii Didkovskyi (b. 1947) and radio presenter Nina Karpovets (b. 1951).

Ivankiv today

The town lies in Kyiv Polissia on the left bank of the Teteriv, 82 km from Kyiv. Its Central Park stands on the site of a 10th–13th century hillfort and holds the 400th Anniversary memorial sign; the Symbol of Life monument (2000) rises by the bus station, and the Bell of Chornobyl memorial (1989) stands on a hill nearby.
