A short history of Yampil

Yampil is known from the 16th century as a trading town of the Bratslav Voivodeship. In winter 1651, during the Khmelnytsky uprising, a Crown army under Stanislaw Lanckoronski took and destroyed it; about 6,000 Cossacks and Vlachs died, and a memorial cross now recalls that night. From the early 18th century the town belonged to the Potocki family, who built a pier and warehouses for goods shipped along the Dniester from the Black Sea. Yampil became a county town of the Podolia Governorate in 1797, a district centre in 1932 and received town status in 1985.

The town is linked with Alfred Schamanek (1883-1920), a colonel of the Ukrainian Galician Army and chief of its General Staff.

The town lies in a ravine on the left bank of the Dniester on the Moldovan border, and the Yampil-Cosauti ferry crossing links the two banks. Landmarks include St Nicholas Church, the local history museum, a 19th-century Jewish cemetery and the "Yampil Layers" geological natural monument. A MiG-15 jet stands near the town park.
