Kaharlyk: from Horodets to a town

Kaharlyk's recorded history starts in 1142 with Horodets, a palisaded fort with a watchtower in today's town centre; remains of the Torchesk hillfort survive on the outskirts. The name Kaharlyk itself first appears in 1590, when King Sigismund III Vasa granted the land to Prince Janusz Ostrogski. Catherine II later gave the estate to Dmytro Troshchynskyi, who built the Holy Trinity Church and a manor with a park, and from 1875 Governor-General Mykhailo Chertkov added a church, a school and a hospital and had the park rebuilt with a rotunda and marble statues. Kaharlyk became a town in 1971.

People of Kaharlyk

Agronomist and publisher Yevhen Arkhypenko (1884–1959), actors Mytrofan Kononenko (1900–1965) and Vasyl Dashenko (1916–1985), embroidery artist Raisa Horbach (1938–2006) and philologist and dissident Vira Lisova (b. 1937) were born here. Mykola Gogol visited the town in 1851.

The town lies on the Mokryi Kaharlyk River between the Dnipro, Stuhna and Ros, where the N-01 and N-02 highways cross.
