Kaniv: a town with chronicle history

Kaniv is first mentioned in the Kyiv Cave Patericon between 1074 and 1088. In 1144 Prince Vsevolod Olhovych founded the Dormition Cathedral of St George here, and in 1155 Kaniv was the official meeting place of Rus princes and Cuman envoys. The papal envoy Giovanni da Pian del Carpine passed through in 1245. In the 16th century Kaniv became a Cossack shrine: the remains of Hetman Ivan Pidkova were brought here in 1578, and the Kaniv Regiment was formed in the 1630s.

Notable names

Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861) is buried on Chernecha (Taras) Hill, whose grave was tended by Ivan Yadlovskyi from 1884 to 1933. Cossack leader Samiilo Kishka was born and buried in Kaniv; philologist Mytrofan Andriievskyi (1842–1887) and actress Olha Kusenko (1919–1997) were also born here. Locals honour Junior Sergeant Anatolii Chupylka, a native who fell defending Donetsk Airport on 20 January 2015.

Kaniv today

Kaniv stands on the right bank of the Dnipro, 150 km from Kyiv. Key sights are the Taras Hill Shevchenko National Reserve, the Dormition (St George) Cathedral of 1144, the Basilian School building of 1784 and the Museum of Folk Decorative Art.
