What to know about Kitsman

Kitsman has been known since 1413, when it was mentioned in a charter of the Moldavian ruler Alexander the Good. Standing at a crossroads between the Dniester and Prut valleys, the border town often suffered Tatar and Polish raids in the 15th–18th centuries. It became part of Austria in 1774 and in 1778 gained self-government and the right to hold an annual fair. A Ukrainian-German gymnasium opened in 1904, and in June 1920 local students protested against the Romanianisation of Ukrainian schools. The town was liberated from occupation on 28 March 1944.

Notable people of Kitsman

Volodymyr Ivasiuk, the poet and composer who wrote "Chervona Ruta" and Hero of Ukraine, was born in Kitsman on 4 March 1949. His father, writer and folklorist Mykhailo Ivasiuk, also a native, taught at the local school and helped open the music school now named after his son. Public figure Daria Rebet (1913–1992) and architect and conductor Ivan Zhukovsky were also born here.

Kitsman today

The town lies on the Sovytsia River, a tributary of the Prut, 25 km from Chernivtsi, on the M19 highway and a railway line. Its architectural monument is the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross (1906); other sights include the Kitsman History Museum, the Volodymyr Ivasiuk monument, the former magistrate building and the city park. One theory links the name to "kots", a small rug, as carpet weaving has long been practised here. We deliver bouquets to any address in Kitsman.
