Kolomyia: a town from the chronicles

Kolomyia is first mentioned in 1241 in the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle. It began as a fortress guarding the Prut defensive line and by the mid-13th century was known for salt mining; the local salt traders were called “kolomyitsi”. In October 1405 King W?adys?aw Jagie??o granted hereditary w?jt rights in the town, and the same year Kolomyia received Magdeburg rights. In 1848 the first Ukrainian reading room in Galicia opened here, followed by a gymnasium (1861) and a printing house (1864); in 1866 the Lviv — Chernivtsi railway linked the town to the Austro-Hungarian network.

Famous people of Kolomyia

Kolomyia is the birthplace of Yosafat Kobrynskyi (1818–1901), a cultural and church figure and patron whose name the local folk art museum bears, of composer Anatolii Kos-Anatolskyi (1909–1983) and of artist and poet Sviatoslav Hordynskyi (1906–1993). Paralympian Olena Yurkovska (b. 1983), multiple Paralympic champion in 2006 and 2010, is also linked to the town.

Kolomyia today

The town lies on the left bank of the Prut, 65 km from Ivano-Frankivsk, at a junction of rail and road routes. Landmarks include the Town Hall (1877), the wooden Church of the Annunciation (1587) with its 16th-century belfry, St Michael's Church (1855—1871), the Kobrynskyi National Museum of Hutsul and Pokuttia Folk Art and the Pysanka painting museum.
