Koriukivka: from a Cossack settlement to a town

Koriukivka's story begins in 1657, when settlers from Right-Bank Ukraine led by the Cossack Omelian Karuka founded the settlement of Karukivka on the Brech River. From the 1690s it belonged, with a break, to the Polubotok family, including Chernihiv colonel Pavlo Polubotok. In 1858 Karl Rauch built a sugar factory here; in 1887 the plants were bought by Lazar Brodsky, and their sugar won gold medals in Moscow (1882) and at the Paris World Exhibition (1900). Koriukivka became a district centre in 1923 and a town in 1958.

Notable people of Koriukivka

Portrait sculptor Zinovii Vilenskyi (1899–1984) and poet Serhii Zharyi (1939–2025) were born here. Bandura player Oleksandr Korniievskyi (1889–1988), creator of the chromatic concert bandura, lived and died in the town. Koriukivka native Oleksandr Shemet (1970–2025), a lieutenant colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is a Hero of Ukraine who took part in the last air breakthrough to Azovstal.
