The village of Birzula is first recorded in 1779 in Turkish documents listing 41 settlements of the Dubossary district. The railway shaped its growth: in 1863–1865 Birzula station on the Odesa–Balta line became one of the first railway junctions in Ukraine. In early February 1919 talks between the Directorate of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Entente staff in Odesa took place here. The settlement became a town in 1938, and on 12 May 2016 the former Kotovsk was renamed Podilsk after its location in historical Podillia. Since 2020 it has been the centre of Podilsk district.
Birzula is the birthplace of physicist Gleb Wataghin (1899–1986), founder of a scientific school in Brazil. Natives also include two-time Olympic 4?400 m relay champion Liudmyla Dzhyhalova (born 1962), Dynamo Kyiv footballer Volodymyr Muntian (1946–2025), a seven-time Soviet champion and Cup Winners' Cup winner, and actress Larysa Rusnak (born 1962). Writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi visited in the 1890s and used a local story in his work "For the Common Good".
The town sits on the southern spurs of the Podillia Upland, on the watershed of the Yahorlyk and Tylihul rivers, and is the largest town in the north of Odesa region. It is a major rail junction with lines to Zhmerynka, Pervomaisk and Odesa. On Birzulskyi Boulevard the old station building of 1865 faces the 1946 station. Worth a visit are the Podilsk Local History Museum, Shevchenko Park and the Tokarskyi Garden stretching along the ravines to the Yahorlyk.
