Kozelets, a Cossack regimental town

Kozelets has been known since the 17th century as a fortified town; Beauplan's 1650 map marks it as Kesellze. From 1649 it was a company centre of the Kyiv Regiment, and in 1656 Bohdan Khmelnytskyi granted it Magdeburg rights. In 1662 a Cossack council held here elected Yakym Somko as hetman. From 1708 to 1781 Kozelets was the seat of the Kyiv Regiment administration, flourishing most in the 1770s. Taras Shevchenko visited in spring 1846 and later described the town in his novella The Princess.

Famous natives of Kozelets

Natives include Kyrylo Tarakh-Tarlovskyi (1709–1784), confessor to Catherine II, palaeontologist Mariia Pavlova (1854–1938), film director Heorhii Stabovyi (1894–1968), pathophysiologist Volodymyr Nehovskyi (1909–2003) and poet Yurii Levitanskyi (1922–1996).

Kozelets today

The settlement lies on the Oster River by the E95 Kyiv–Chernihiv highway; one version links its name to the wildflowers that cover the river banks in spring, and its coat of arms shows a silver goat. The highlight is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin (1753–1766), alongside the Regimental Chancellery (1756–1760), St. Nicholas Church (1784), the Ascension Church and the 18th-century Pokorshchyna manor.
