Kozelshchyna: from a Cossack officer's settlement to today

Kozelshchyna dates from 1718, when Poltava colonel Ivan Cherniak issued a charter to Petro Kozelskyi, acting captain of the Kobeliaky company, who founded the settlement and gave it his name. The railway reached Kozelshchyna in 1870. In the second half of the 19th century the estate belonged to the Kapnist family, who built the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in 1882 in thanks for their daughter Maria's recovery; a convent followed in 1891, and its cathedral was built in 1900–1906 to a design by architect S. Nosov.

Notable people of Kozelshchyna
