Krasyliv: from its first mention to today

Krasyliv first appears in writing in an act of the Lithuanian Prince ?vitrigaila dated 16 January 1444, which names it "Krasyliv on the Sluch". From 1497 to 1620 it belonged to the Ostrozky princes, who founded Krasyliv Castle, and on 9 September 1517 the town received limited Magdeburg rights. Later owners included the Zaslavsky, Lubomirski and Sanguszko families and, from 1753, the Sapiehas; Miko?aj Sapieha (1779–1843) founded the Church of the Sacred Heart. A sugar mill opened in 1842, and Krasyliv became a town in 1964. It was liberated from Nazi occupation on 9 March 1944.

Notable people of Krasyliv

Krasyliv is the birthplace of Stepan Khotovytsky, a founder of paediatrics in the region (19th century), Hero of the Soviet Union Petro Kiziun (1917–1979) and biochemist Borys Tsudzevych (1939–2015). The town is also linked to choral conductor Mykola Katsal (1940–2016), founder of the Dudaryk choir and a Shevchenko Prize laureate, and to film director and producer Pavlo Ostrikov (born 1990), a member of the European Film Academy.

Krasyliv today

The town lies on the Sluch River, 36 km from Khmelnytskyi. Landmarks include the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Holy Trinity Church, St Volodymyr the Great Church (2006), a monument to Taras Shevchenko, a Second World War memorial, a Holodomor memorial sign and the city park.
