Kremenchuk: from its first mention to today

Kremenchuk's official founding date is 1571, based on a mention in Joachim Bielski's chronicle. In 1635 King W?adys?aw IV granted it Magdeburg rights, and French engineer Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan drew up plans for its fortress. In 1661–1666 it was the centre of the Kremenchuk Regiment, and in 1764 it became the capital of New Russia Governorate. A railway and a bridge across the Dnieper arrived in 1872, and an electric tram followed in 1899.

Famous natives of Kremenchuk

Composer Dimitri Tiomkin (1894–1979), a four-time Oscar winner, painter and sculptor Man?-Katz (1894–1962) and history painter Oleksandr Lytovchenko (1835–1890) were born here. Kremenchuk native Major Ihor Puhach (1979–2022) was posthumously named Hero of Ukraine.

Kremenchuk today

Poltava region's second-largest city spans both banks of the Dnieper; its right-bank district of Kriukiv was once called the chumak capital. Landmarks include the Palace of Culture and Creativity, the Dnieper ship-traffic observation house, the Pike from Kremenchuk monument and the Makarenko Museum.
