What to know about Kremenets

Kremenets enters the chronicles in 1227, when the castle's lord, Prince Mstyslav Udatnyi, routed the army of King Andrew II of Hungary beneath its walls. In early 1241 the fortress withstood Batu Khan's hordes. Queen Bona Sforza, who held the castle in 1536–1556, strengthened it considerably; in autumn 1648 it fell to Maksym Kryvonis's Cossacks after a six-week siege and was never rebuilt. The Volhynian Gymnasium opened in 1805 and became a lyceum in 1819, earning the town the name Athens of Volhynia. Taras Shevchenko visited the area in autumn 1846.

Natives include Polish Romantic poet Juliusz S?owacki (1809–1849), violinist Isaac Stern (1920–2001), composer Mykhailo Verykivskyi (1896–1962), author of the first Ukrainian oratorio and ballet, singer and Harry Potter translator Viktor Morozov (born 1950) and multiple armwrestling world champion Andrii Pushkar (1985–2018).

Kremenets today

The town sits at the foot of the Kremenets Hills, 60 km from Ternopil, on the Irva stream, a tributary of the Ikva. Highlights are Castle Hill (Bona) with its gate tower and walls, the Jesuit College complex (1731–1743) by Paolo Fontana, now the Transfiguration Cathedral, St Nicholas Cathedral of the former Franciscan monastery, the baroque Twins house and the Juliusz S?owacki Museum. Around it lie the Kremenets Mountains National Park and a botanical garden, and the local speciality is buckwheat varenyky with cheese.
